Looking back on 2011…

If there’s one thing I can say about the last 12 months, it’s this: 2011 was the most satisfying year of my life on so many levels. I was satisfied with myself, and the way I carried myself all year. I took a lot of chances and took advantage of every opportunity that came my way, and it all paid off.

I got to see most of the people I wanted to see throughout the year, which I was happy with. I re-connected with a lot of my extended family after many years away. I got to interview a ridiculous number of people who I respect and admire through the podcast. I met a lot of folks who I only knew through social networking, and found them all to be as amazing in person as they were online.

As far as comics go, I got to write a story for my best friend to draw, and it was a fantastic collaboration. I’m developing a new webcomic with another one of my best friends, and it just keeps getting better with every time we talk. I’m also in the process of writing a new concept for one of my favorite indy publishers. Of course, the podcast is gaining a following that includes a lot of folks whose work I enjoy. There’s no greater honor for me, honestly.

It wasn’t a perfect year. There were a lot of health scares among friends and family, then there was the nasty car accident right before the holidays hit. It was costly, but life is like that some times.

In the end, 2011 was very good to me. I can’t complain. I’m thankful for my family, and all my friends for being there all year long.

2012 is on the horizon, and I’m excited to see what comes next…

Happy new year, everyone! Be safe!

It’s that time of the year again.

The time where I scramble to do something a little different for my friends and send them something that they probably don’t get too often: art.

Granted, I’m not the greatest illustrator in the world. I honestly don’t think I’m any good, but people seem to like my stuff, so this is a way for me to show them my appreciation.

For the last 7 years, I’ve been sending out holiday sketches to friends. In fact, I keep a list. It started with about 50 people. And every year, it grows exponentially…to the point where, in 2010, I LITERALLY drew 380+ of these things and mailed them all out.

Don’t get me wrong, there’s a certain sense of satisfaction that I gain from doing these, because they keep me creative and they keep me drawing…even when I really shouldn’t.

My doctor has told me that I have to cut back, or just plain stop drawing as much as I have been, because it’s not good for my arm, and its been the cause of repetitive stress injuries over the years.

So this year, I had to make a tough choice, and I had to whittle down the list to something manageable. I brought it down to 50. Then there were certain folks that I really wanted to draw something for that didn’t make the cut, and I pushed it up to 75.

Yeah, I’m starting to feel the burn, but I don’t care. I enjoy drawing for my friends. I’ll never stop that. But I’m writing this just to basically apologize to anyone who isn’t getting one this year, because I DO feel bad about it…but I do have to take care of myself, too.

So, to everyone getting a sketch (you’ll know, because I asked you for an address), I hope you enjoy them.

Merry Christmas and happy holidays, my friends.

You all made this a very good year for me.

Podcasting Notes…

Friends, I am REALLY ahead of schedule.

I mean, ridiculously ahead. Shows have been recorded that’ll take us through most of November. So I apologize if there are some topics that may be a little out of date, though I am honestly contemplating doing an extra show or two to talk about more current comics happenings, or even releasing an extra show every other week.

At any rate, here’s the upcoming schedule.

Episode 59 - Mike McKone.

Episode 60 - The Wire roundtable with Caroline Pruett, Paul Montgomery and Sean McKeever.

Episode 61 - X-Men chat with Ron Richards.

Episode 62 - Skottie Young.

Episode 63 - Kevin Mellon.

Episode 64 - Chris Yost.

In addition to that, we have folks like Mike Carey, Frank Tieri, Kalman Andrasofszky and more waiting to be scheduled.

We’re also looking into doing some special year-ender episodes where we look to catch up with some guests and look into next year.

I’m honestly very overwhelmed by all the love that’s being thrown our way, and I (along with my army of co-hosts) will continue to do my best to give you a podcast that entertains, educates, and makes you appreciate the things and people that we geek out about.

Never, ever be ashamed to love what you love.

Hope you all enjoy the shows.
