It was only a matter of time before the Star Wars comic franchise returned to Marvel’s hands. Starting in 2015, fans will have three new series that take a closer look at some of the galaxy’s most revered, and feared, characters. Kieron Gillen, Mark Waid and Jason Aaron will follow the stories of Darth Vader, Princess Leia and the Millenium Falcon crew right after the destruction of the first Death Star in A New Hope.

Beginning in January 2015, Aaron will take helm of the flagship series Star Wars!  with artist John Cassaday and colorist Laura Martin. Aaron told Marvel.com what fans can expect from his book, “Every story is about the characters, and we’ll focus on all the old favorites. There will be big moments for everyone, from Han to R2-D2. But a major part of the narrative will be driven by Luke Skywalker and his journey of discovery, a journey that will decide the fate of an entire galaxy.”

With the return of the Rebels, you know the Imperial forces are not far behind. Gillen has been tasked with not just telling Darth Vader’s story, but giving readers a look into what’s going on behind the helmet after Vader lost the key plans of the Death Star.  “Vader’s the sole survivor of the greatest military disaster in history – and a disaster that he definitely had a hand in by letting the rebels escape with the plans for the Death Star. This is not a thing which leaves you in anybody’s good books, let alone the Emperor’s,” says Gillen. “The great thing about this period [between Star Wars: A New Hope and Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back] is what we don’t see on the screen. Vader learns who Luke Skywalker is at some point between the two movies, to choose but one example.” Salvador Larroca will be joining Gillen as artist for Darth Vader, which is slated for a February 2015 release.

Then, in March of 2015, Princess Leia gets a five part mini-series written by Mark Waid; and art by Terry Dodson. With her planet gone, Leia is left without a kingdom to rule but it doesn’t mean she’s no longer a princess, “Does she choose to be a Princess of nothing – or does she set out to rebuild her heritage and civilization?” says writer Mark Waid.

These three new titles will help reshape the world of Star Wars, after the announcement by Lucas Films that the previous Expanded Universe is no longer canon. It looks like Marvel hopes these titles will be a primer for Episode VII; and give fans old and new something to chew over until the next film comes out.

Really looking forward to these books!

In a continued effort to bring new readers to the world of comic books, Marvel teamed up with ABC’s The View to promote the next story arc in Thor, God of Thunder. Looks like a new hand will be wielding the mighty Mjolnir, and it’s not the typical male archetype we’ve come to expect from our Asgardian hammer tosser. The new Thor will be a woman.

“This is not She-Thor. This is not Lady Thor. This is not Thorita. This is THOR. This is the THOR of the Marvel Universe. But it’s unlike any Thor we’ve ever seen before,” said series writer, Jason Aaron.

Aaron will be joined on the book by Cyclops artist, Russell Dauterman.

Just who will take up the mantle of the God of Thunder? Marvel may wait til San Diego Comic Con next week to drop that bombshell on us. But on The View, a little clue was hinted about her origins, “The story behind her is she created herself. She was saved by Thor and she came down to Earth, followed him, and made herself look like Thor and so now she’s taking over.”

REALLY looking forward to this!
